Sitting Bull was killed on December 15, 1890, at the Standing Rock Agency, in a confrontation with Indian Police sent to arrest him.
He was buried at Fort Yates, in North Dakota.
His remains did not stay there in peace.
In 1953, a group of South Dakotans — motivated by local boosters who wanted to capitalize on Sitting Bull’s fame — conducted a reburial ceremony and moved what they claimed were Sitting Bull’s remains to a location near Mobridge, South Dakota.
The legitimacy of this reburial — whether they actually exhumed and moved Sitting Bull’s remains, or whether they moved other remains from the same area — has been contested.
His descendants in North Dakota maintained that his remains are at Fort Yates.
