The Monument That Is Not A Grave
The Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills — the mountain being carved into the image of the Lakota leader — is not his grave.
It is not near his grave, as far as anyone publicly knows.
It is a monument to his memory, created by a Polish-American sculptor on land that was itself taken from the Lakota, commissioned by Lakota leaders who wanted a monument comparable to the presidential faces carved on the nearby Mount Rushmore.
The Memorial has been under construction since 1948 and is still far from completion.
