This matters for the Skull and Bones story because it means that the Fort Sill Apache cemetery in 1918 contained multiple Apache graves, all in an area where a grave-robbing party might have been confused about which grave belonged to which person.

The grave of Geronimo was presumably marked, but the quality of grave markers in military cemeteries of that period was not uniform, and night-time operations by people who were artillery students rather than professional grave robbers might have disturbed the wrong grave.

Marc Wortman, who discovered the 1918 letter, has stated his own skepticism that the grave disturbed in 1918 was actually Geronimo’s.

Others have been less skeptical.
