Mitochondrial haplogroup — the maternal-line ancestral category that can be traced back many generations.

If the remains are Geronimo’s, their mitochondrial DNA should match that of his descendants through the maternal line.

Y-chromosome haplogroup, if applicable — the paternal-line ancestral category.

Geronimo’s male-line descendants would share his Y-chromosome haplogroup.

Autosomal DNA — the genetic material from chromosomes 1 through 22, which contains information about ancestry from all genealogical lines.

This is more complex to interpret but can provide information about population of origin.

A finding of match between the remains’ DNA and descendants’ DNA would be consistent with the remains being Geronimo’s, though it could not rule out that the remains belonged to another closely related individual.
