What stands between the question and the answer is not a failure of science but a failure of accountability.

If the relevant remains were identified, examined, and found to be Geronimo’s, the next steps would involve consultation with the affiliated Apache communities about repatriation — the same process that NAGPRA requires for remains in institutional collections.

Geronimo’s remains might ultimately be returned to Fort Sill for proper Apache burial, or to the Mescalero Apache Reservation in New Mexico, or to some other location determined by the Apache communities most closely connected to his memory.
