The Army records do not document any disturbance of the grave in 1918 or at any other time.

This absence of official documentation is not surprising — a clandestine grave robbery conducted by artillery students training at the post would not be expected to appear in official Army records, unless discovered and investigated, which there is no evidence it was.

The Army’s role in managing the Fort Sill Apache prisoner-of-war cemetery means that the condition of the graves was nominally the Army’s responsibility.
