The Record She Left In Her Own Words

Among the most remarkable things about the Wrangel Island story is that Ada Blackjack documented it herself — in real time, in the diary she kept across the months of her isolation.

Her writing was in English, imperfect and direct, the English of a woman who had learned to read and write in a mission school rather than a formal academic institution.

It had the quality of language that is used because it is useful, not because it is ornamental.
