What the researchers found was consistent across different Indigenous Arctic groups: a knowledge system that combined ecological observation at a fine-grained level (specific animal behavior, seasonal patterns, landscape features) with practical technology (tools, clothing, food preparation) and cultural frameworks (relationships between humans and animals, obligations of the hunter) into a coherent whole.

This wasn’t primitive guesswork.

It was the product of thousands of years of empirical observation and adaptive learning.

By the late twentieth century, the scientific community had begun to formally recognize what researchers called Traditional Ecological Knowledge, or TEK, as a valid and complementary source of environmental information.

The United States National Park Service, the Alaska Native Knowledge Network, and numerous research institutions began programs specifically designed to document and incorporate TEK into land management and conservation decisions.

The Alaska Arctic Observatory and Knowledge Hub — a collaboration between university scientists and Iñupiat observers in northern Alaska — was established partly on the recognition that Indigenous hunters and community members were observing climate and environmental changes in ways that complemented and sometimes exceeded what scientific instruments could measure.
