The IOC arranged for new medals to be struck from the original molds — not of solid gold, which had not been used for Olympic medals since 1912, but of the modern silver alloy with gold plating.
IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch presented these commemorative medals at a ceremony at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles on January 18, 1983, attended by several of Thorpe’s children.
