More than a century after the Stockholm Olympics, most people who knew Jim Thorpe’s story thought they understood it.

He had won.

The titles had been taken.

He had been restored, at least partially.

The family had the commemorative medals.

The wrong had been acknowledged.

What most accounts of the story missed — or glossed over — was that the official Olympic historical record, as it stood from 1983 until 2022, still listed two gold medalists in the pentathlon and two gold medalists in the decathlon.
