The Native American Who Won Two Olympic Gold Medals – Then Had His Titles Taken Away Before History Finally Reversed The Decision
The announcement came on July 15, 2022 — the 110th anniversary of Thorpe’s decathlon victory.
IOC President Thomas Bach issued a statement calling it “a most exceptional and unique situation” addressed by “an extraordinary gesture of fair play from the National Olympic Committees concerned.” Bie was listed as co-winner of the silver medal in the pentathlon alongside James Donahue, the American who had originally been elevated to silver.
Wieslander was moved to silver in the decathlon.
The arrangement preserved something for the families of Bie and Wieslander while completing what had been left incomplete in 1982.
