Richard Henry Pratt founded Carlisle in 1879 on the philosophy he summarized as “Kill the Indian, save the man.” The school was designed not to educate Native children in the way that education is typically understood — building on the knowledge and values of the student’s community — but to replace that community with something else.

Students were forbidden to speak their Native languages.
