The honest account is the more complex one: a rule was misapplied to an athlete who did not know about a convention that would have protected him, in an environment structured by assumptions that disadvantaged people in exactly his position, and the misapplication was maintained for more than a century by institutional inertia and by the specific resistance of the most powerful individual in amateur sport.

That is not a less damning account than the simplified one.

It is a more accurate one, and accuracy matters because the accurate account points to the structural features of the system rather than to individual villainy that can be contained by assigning blame and moving on.
