The Code Talker story was one thread in a much larger tapestry of Native advocacy and federal policy reckoning.

The ongoing relevance of that reckoning is not simply historical.

The question of federal responsibility for the damage done by the boarding school era — a question that the Department of Interior formally addressed in a 2022 investigation and report acknowledging the systemic abuse and harm produced by federal Indian boarding schools — involves many of the same communities and many of the same language communities as the Code Talker program.

The Navajo Nation is among the communities whose members experienced the boarding school system most extensively, and the language suppression that system was designed to produce is the same language suppression whose failure enabled the Code Talker program.

The connections are real, and they complicate any simple narrative of triumph.
