It is a compelling arc, and it is not false.

But it misses several things that matter.

It misses the full complexity of why Navajo men enlisted.

The narrative of patriotic service is real — many Code Talkers expressed genuine commitment to the defense of their country and their community.

But the economic factors, the social dynamics of reservation life in the Depression era, the complex relationship between the Navajo Nation’s traditional warrior culture and the specific circumstances of World War II — all of these deserve more nuance than the simple patriotism narrative allows.

It misses the broader context of Native military service, which included the Comanche Code Talkers in Europe, the Choctaw Code Talkers of World War I, and the Meskwaki speakers and others who served in communications roles that have received far less attention than the Navajo program.
