The Code Talker program had consequences for the Diné language that were not all straightforward.

The most obvious consequence was positive: the program provided the most dramatic possible demonstration of the language’s value, a demonstration that has been invoked in language preservation and education advocacy ever since.

But the program also had more complicated effects.

The specific vocabulary developed for the code — the military terms, the substitution alphabet, the specialized usage of ordinary Navajo words in military contexts — was developed for a specific purpose and in a specific historical moment.
