He was a man with an addiction he couldn’t defeat without help that he didn’t have access to, dealing with psychological wounds that the medical establishment of his era had little framework for treating, in a community that had its own layers of historical trauma and limited resources.

The Night The Story Ended

On the morning of January 24, 1955, Ira Hayes was found dead on the Sacaton Flats area of the Gila River Indian Reservation.

He was thirty-two years old.
