The cold temperature of the Pacific Northwest coastal environment, combined with the oxygen-poor condition of the saturated mud, slowed decomposition dramatically across the centuries between the slide and the excavation.

The result was that wooden objects, fiber objects, and other organic materials that normally vanish from the archaeological record within decades were preserved in a condition that allowed them to be excavated and, with appropriate conservation, stabilized.

The wooden objects recovered from Ozette were not “perfectly preserved” in the popular sense.
