The relationship between the Ozette collection and the language documentation effort is one of the ways in which the recovery of the material archive has supported the recovery of the cultural archive.

The objects cannot speak.

But they can provide referents for the words that do, and in doing so they help keep those words meaningful in a world where the practices they encode are less common than they once were.
