The specific chemistry of the Ozette mudslide preservation worked because the covering material was waterlogged and fine-grained, creating an oxygen-poor, cold environment that dramatically slowed the biological decomposition of organic material.

This environment could be maintained because the site was kept wet by the constant precipitation and groundwater movement of the Olympic Peninsula’s wet climate.

The same climate that promotes rapid decomposition in open-air contexts contributed, in this specific sealed context, to the preservation of what was sealed within.

What the preservation preserved, with all its limitations, is an intimate snapshot of a specific moment in the life of six households at Cape Alava.
