THE NATIVE VILLAGE THAT HID HERNANDO DE SOTO’S FIRST CAMP IN AMERICA
Was it a town?
A province?
A political territory?
A particular settlement?
Did the name apply to one place or a broader region?
Those questions are difficult because the Spanish were translating an Indigenous political landscape into their own language.
The archaeological discovery does not eliminate all uncertainty.
But it gives the name a physical anchor.
