Town names feel ancient.

But almost all of these systems are recent compared with Indigenous occupation.

The southeastern landscape was named and organized differently long before Georgia existed as a colony or state.

A creek could be known by one Native name, then another, and later an English name.

A village could disappear.

A political center could move.

A road could follow an ancient trail without preserving its original name.

This is why archaeological discoveries are so important.
