Woman Chief’s story takes one of its most striking turns in the period following the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851.

The Horse Creek Treaty, as it is also known, was an agreement negotiated between the United States government and representatives of multiple plains nations — Lakota, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Crow, Arikara, Assiniboine, Mandan, Hidatsa, and others.

The treaty attempted to establish territorial boundaries between nations and to create conditions for peace on the northern plains.

It was negotiated with limited success and was subsequently violated in various ways by both the American government and various tribal parties.
