Denig’s account of Woman Chief survives because he was writing a systematic ethnographic study of the upper Missouri tribes — a professional project that happened to include biographical treatment of the most remarkable individual he had personally known.
If he had not undertaken that project, or if the notes had been lost, we might know only the Pine Leaf of Beckwourth’s fiction, and the documentary Woman Chief would be almost entirely unrecoverable.
