Running Eagle was a Piegan woman who participated in raids and warfare after the death of her first husband, eventually becoming a recognized warrior with a following of her own.

She was killed in battle in the 1870s.

Among the Lakota, women occasionally participated in battle, though the specific institutional recognition of women as warriors was less extensively developed than among the Crow.

The Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876 involved at least some women in combat roles, though the specific accounts are fragmentary.
