The Nez Perce Chief Who Refused To Surrender 40 Miles From Canada — Then Slipped Past The Army And Escaped
On the morning of September 30, 1877, Miles attacked.
The initial assault came with cavalry and was initially successful in capturing most of the nimíipuu horse herd — the horses that had been grazing away from the camp’s defensive perimeter.
Without those horses, the option of immediate flight was eliminated for most of the people in camp.
The nimíipuu warriors defended the camp’s ravines and rifle pits against the cavalry assault.
The fighting was intense.
