Cole did not simply disappear after Hayes Pond.

He continued to threaten future activity and initially promised another, larger rally.

That rally never materialized in Robeson County.

His legal problems continued.

He was eventually convicted on riot-related charges and later served prison time after his appeals failed.

His organization also faced internal problems and pressure from law enforcement.

The broader Klan did not vanish from North Carolina, but Cole’s attempt to use Robeson County as a stage for intimidation had backfired spectacularly.

The man who wanted to recruit through fear had instead provided a national example of Klan weakness.

That is one reason Hayes Pond became such an effective story in anti-Klan memory.
