Visitors can see that Hayes Pond was not an abstract national symbol.

It happened in a particular landscape near Maxton, in the heart of Lumbee country.

Place matters because the conflict was about who could control that landscape socially.

The Klan behaved as though it could enter, stage a spectacle, and leave fear behind.

The marker now preserves the opposite memory.

The people already there controlled the ending.

The story traveled beyond newspapers into music.

Folk singer Malvina Reynolds wrote “The Battle of Maxton Field,” a satirical song about the Klan’s defeat.

Pete Seeger later performed the song as well.
