The Night They Pulled Back the Covers
PART 2
He’d thought his wife was keeping a secret. He’d thought maybe his mother was right. He’d thought the blanket over her legs was a wall between them, a sign that something in their marriage had gone wrong.
But when Julian lifted it, the truth didn’t just break his heart. It shattered the picture he’d carried of his own mother his whole life.
Mariana was seven months pregnant, trembling, ashamed, and suffering in silence, because the woman who called herself “family” had ordered her to keep her mouth shut. And that night, Julian learned something terrible: sometimes the person warning you about betrayal is the one standing closest to the crime.
The blue fabric slipped out of Julian’s trembling fingers and pooled at the edge of the mattress. Underneath, Mariana’s legs were covered in a horrific map of deep, yellowing bruises and angry red welts that ran all the way up her shins to her knees.
Her ankles were swollen, the skin raw and chafed, as if she’d been forced to stand for hours on hard, unforgiving ground.
Mariana instantly pulled her knees to her chest, sobbing into her hands as she tried to drag the blanket back over herself to hide her shame.
Julian dropped to his knees beside the bed, the breath knocked clean out of him. “Mariana… oh my God, Mari. What happened to you? Did you fall? Did someone knock you down?”
Before Mariana could answer, Doña Carmen crossed her arms and let out a sharp, dismissive sigh from the doorway. “Oh, please, Julian. Don’t let her fool you with the theatrics. She’s clumsy. I told her to clean the high shelves in the pantry and scrub the tiles downstairs, and she probably tripped over her own two feet because she’s carrying so much weight. She just wants to make me look bad so you’ll pity her.”
