She kept her eyes on Michelle and she said, “I’m waiting.”

What broke it was not Evelyn.

It was Michelle.

She had been holding one of the babies.

She handed her to the woman standing nearest, which happened to be a caterer, and she said — to Evelyn, but loudly enough that a hundred and ninety people heard it:

“I did it for him.”

Christopher said, “What?”

“I did it for you,” Michelle said, and then she said the rest of it, on a lawn, in Paradise Valley, at four fifteen in the afternoon.
