She did not tell Christopher.
She let him believe, for eleven months, that he had conceived twins with her, immediately, at thirty-nine, after six years of failing to conceive with me.
And he believed it.
That is the part I still find remarkable.
He believed it instantly and entirely, and he told a hundred people, and he told me on the telephone at 4:11 on a Thursday afternoon, because it confirmed the only thing he had ever really wanted to be true, which was that the problem had never been him.
On the lawn, Christopher said: “You let me think they were mine.”
