She told me the whole thing in about twenty minutes and I listened to almost all of it without saying anything.
And what I felt, when she finished, was not what I had expected and not what anyone would want me to have felt.
I was sick.
Physically.
I had to put the phone down on the counter and go and stand at the sink.
Because a woman I had known since I was eighteen had destroyed herself in front of a hundred and ninety people, and there were two babies crying in the heat, and I had spent six weeks assembling a document that had detonated the day before in a boardroom and would land on Monday morning, and none of it was reversible and none of it had been an accident.
I want that in here because of what it corrects.
