The One Who Hadn’t Stopped Looking
They had all been true all day.
But I could not see them while the question was closed, and I could see all of them the instant it reopened.
I have thought about that often, since: that the difference between a widow and a rescuer, that night, was not information but attention, was not what I knew but whether I was still looking.
The watch did not tell me Mark was alive.
It only told me to look again.
