At dawn, I called my sister, who is a forensic accountant.

“I need you to meet me at Mark’s company headquarters,” I said.

“Right now.”

“What are we looking for, Claire?” she asked.

“Something he uncovered,” I said, “right before they tried to bury him alive.” And a few hours later, the hospital’s preliminary toxicology reports came back, and they confirmed that this had never been a natural death at all.
