The following months were painful.
Caldwell Construction sold machinery and investment properties to meet what obligations it could.
Projects were reassigned to competing contractors.
The mansion in Greenwich was eventually sold, and Charles and Victoria moved into a modest apartment outside the city.
They did not become homeless.
But the luxury dinners vanished, and so did the overseas vacations, the new cars, the expensive clubs, and the many friends who, it turned out, had only ever returned their calls because they believed the Caldwells still had influence.
Andrew found work as an inventory supervisor at a distribution center in New Jersey.
