The new life settled into a rhythm, and the rhythm was the point of it.

She rose early and flew in the clean Texas mornings with a student white-knuckling the controls beside her, and she taught them to breathe and to see and to stop fighting the airplane, and she watched them get better one lesson at a time, which is the only way anyone ever gets better at anything.

She was home by dinner.
