The Person I Was Never Meant to Meet
“I offered her a financial settlement.”
“You bought her silence.”
What chilled me, standing in that study, was not that my father had done it.
It was how untroubled he was to be discussing it.
There was no flicker of shame in him, no defensiveness even — only a mild irritation at having to explain something he considered self-evident to a son too sentimental to grasp it. Gabriela had no proof. He said it the way a man points out a flaw in a contract.
In his mind, the absence of proof was not a moral fact but a tactical one; she couldn’t force the issue, therefore the issue did not exist, therefore handling it was simply good sense.
