Rebecca reached into her coat pocket and took out a folded sheet of blue legal paper.

“I keep the certified decree right here,” she said.

The paper had the raised blue seal of the county court.

At the bottom, Paul’s handwriting lay heavy across the signature line marked legal guardian.

“He signed full custody over to me before you ever left the hospital,” Rebecca said.

“Where’s my signature on this paper?” I asked.

“Who signed the hospital release forms?”

“Paul signed everything that mattered,” Rebecca said, folding the blue paper back into quarters.
