The Photograph of a Newborn in a Yellow Knitted Hat
She was pushing a blue bicycle across the frozen lawn, her breath making small white clouds in the winter air.
She wore a heavy green winter jacket and had a long red ribbon wound tightly around her left index finger.
I stood up and held out my hand to help her lift the bike over the concrete curb.
Lily ignored my hand completely.
She leaned the bicycle against the side of a metal trash can and sat down at the far end of my bench.
She began winding the red ribbon around her other fingers, weaving the bright fabric between her pale knuckles.
