“She thinks the land could be developed for the family,” my mother added. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Developed? She doesn’t own it, Mom!” I snapped. “Dad left this to me, so why can’t you both understand that?”

My mother’s voice turned icy. “You don’t need to raise your voice to me.”

“Skylar is only trying to help, because you’re a soldier and not a landowner,” she said. I closed my eyes and tried to stay calm.
