This was a deadline. Die before Friday. It was not the language of someone waiting for me to die.

It was the language of someone who had scheduled it.

I did not yet understand the mechanism, the corporate clause and the offshore transfer and the exact reason Friday mattered so much.

But I understood the shape of it, lying there, the way I had understood in the ambulance that the crash was no accident: that the people around me were no longer merely waiting for the crash to finish its work.

They were preparing to finish it themselves.
