The Quietest Voices
I moved my smallest finger.
Elena froze.
Her breath caught.
And slowly, carefully, I opened my eyes, and looked at her, and watched her face turn white with the shock of a woman who has just watched a dead man come back to life.
Before she could cry out, before the sound could escape and bring the wrong people running, I forced out the first words I had spoken in five days, in a voice like gravel dragged over concrete.
“Lock the door.”
