The housekeeper had aced it.
And I would have been a fool, a sentimental fool of exactly the kind my enemies took me for, to let a credential I could buy outweigh a character that had already, under fire, proven itself beyond any possible doubt.
I did not promote Elena despite her having been a housekeeper.
I promoted her because of what she had shown me while she was one, which was that she possessed, in abundance, the only two qualities that had turned out to matter, and that my glittering inner circle had entirely lacked.
