The board members filed back into their chairs. The tension in the room had crystallized into something brittle.

“Our legal counsel has confirmed the following,” Hunter read from his notes. “The will presented by Miss Ashford is valid under state law. It supersedes all previous testamentary documents. Effective immediately, Cecily Anne Ashford holds 51 percent of Ashford Holdings shares,” he said.

Someone inhaled sharply.

“Additionally,” Hunter continued, “as majority shareholder, Miss Ashford has the right to propose motions to the board, including matters pertaining to executive leadership.”

He looked at me. “Miss Ashford, do you have any motions you wish to bring forward?” he asked.

I stood up. My heart was pounding, but my voice held steady. “I have one motion,” I said.
