He sat on the floor of his home office surrounded by paper and read it several times before he could make himself understand it.

It did not mean he was infertile; subsequent panels, he would learn, had shown improvement, and the report only indicated that his initial metrics were compromised and required follow-up testing.

But that was not the point.

And someone had made certain that this document, the one that would have lifted half the weight of blame from his wife’s shoulders, was quietly shelved, hidden, kept from him, so that for years Elena had been allowed, had been made, to carry the entire crushing weight of guilt and shame for a failure that had never belonged to her alone.
