The Room My Father Built
That is what nobody believes.
In that restaurant, at that table, holding my hand — he meant it.
He was having a nice evening with his wife.
He was fond of me.
He would have said, under oath, that he loved me, and I think in whatever sense that word had for him it would have been true.
And it did not touch the other thing at all.
The two lived in the same man in separate rooms and neither room had a window into the other, and it is the single most frightening thing I have ever encountered.
