The Room My Father Built
He did not sleep that night.
At about half past one on Thursday morning he took a phone into a stairwell in a dormitory building and sat on the concrete and tried four times to call me and hung up before it connected.
On the fifth attempt he let it ring.
Here is the thing I have to live with, and I have decided to put it in rather than leave it out.
My son’s first instinct, at 1:40 in the morning, was not to call the police.
