As a boy, he had kept his lawnmower and his old bicycles and the holiday boxes in there.

He watched his elderly parents carry their two paper plates into it, and he felt a rage so cold and so total that he had to hold onto the fence to keep from moving.

Chapter 6 — The Storage Shed

He looked into the shed through its small window, and what he saw finished the transformation of his rage from hot to cold, from an impulse into a plan.

The storage room, where he had once kept his bicycles, now held two narrow twin cots.
