Chapter 3 — Walking Past Their Own Door
He arrived without warning, and he did not go straight to the house.
He left his bags at a small hotel nearby, and then he did something that would prove to be the wisest decision he made all week: rather than driving up in a car or arriving in the clothes of a New York executive, he dressed plainly and walked to his old neighborhood on foot, because he wanted to observe before he announced himself, to see the truth before anyone had the chance to arrange a performance for him.
And late that afternoon, he saw his parents coming down the sidewalk toward the house.
