From the outside, through those long months, Carmen had appeared entirely broken.
She had lost her bedroom, her credit cards, her income, her authority, her place at her own table; she had been made to eat off paper plates in a shed; she had submitted, silently, to indignity after indignity, and had said, so far as anyone could see, nothing.
Veronica had watched this silence and drawn the natural conclusion, the conclusion a predator always draws: that here was a beaten old woman, compliant, defeated, no threat.
